Colonic Hydrotherapy
A private, professionally delivered treatment with Geri Charlton MARCH at Gut Feeling near Bridgwater, Somerset.
If you’re considering colonic hydrotherapy for the first time, this page explains what the treatment involves, what happens during your appointment and what you can expect.
What is colonic hydrotherapy?
Colonic hydrotherapy — sometimes referred to as colonic irrigation or colon hydrotherapy — involves gently introducing temperature-controlled filtered water into the large bowel using specialist equipment.
At Gut Feeling, treatment is delivered using a closed system and is carried out personally by Geri Charlton, an ARCH-registered colonic hydrotherapist.
Your appointment is private and unhurried, with time provided beforehand to discuss the treatment and any questions or concerns you may have.

What happens during the treatment?
Before beginning, Geri will discuss the treatment with you and review the health information provided before your appointment.
You’ll have an opportunity to ask questions and the procedure will be explained before anything begins.
Once you are comfortable and ready, specialist equipment is used to gently introduce filtered water into the colon.
Gut Feeling uses a closed system, meaning waste passes directly through the equipment and away.
Throughout the treatment you remain appropriately covered and your privacy is protected.
Will it hurt?
Colonic hydrotherapy should not normally be painful, although everyone’s experience is different.
During treatment you may experience sensations including fullness, an urge to open your bowels or occasional abdominal cramping.
You are able to communicate with Geri throughout the treatment and should always say if something feels uncomfortable.
Privacy and hygiene
It’s completely understandable to wonder whether colonic hydrotherapy might feel embarrassing.
Your appointment takes place privately and your dignity is protected throughout the treatment.
Gut Feeling uses specialist equipment and follows appropriate hygiene procedures. The closed system carries waste directly away during treatment.
If you are worried about any aspect of your appointment, you’re welcome to speak to Geri beforehand.
Is colonic hydrotherapy suitable for everyone?
No.
There are circumstances and medical conditions where colonic hydrotherapy may not be appropriate.
You’ll be asked to complete a health questionnaire before your appointment so Geri can understand relevant aspects of your health and determine whether treatment is appropriate within her professional scope.
If you have a medical condition, are taking medication, have recently undergone surgery or are unsure whether colonic hydrotherapy is suitable for you, discuss this with Geri and, where appropriate, your GP or another qualified healthcare professional before treatment.
Colonic hydrotherapy is not a replacement for medical diagnosis or treatment.

Gentle abdominal massage
Geri may use gentle abdominal massage during your treatment. This allows the treatment to remain hands-on and gives you the opportunity to communicate with Geri throughout your appointment.
